Kilmichael
Glassary Churchyard
Clan
Mactavish and the Templars
Clan
tradition holds that at the start of the
Late Middle Ages, in about 1388 to 1390,
several elder Templars arrived at the Clan
homelands of Dunardry. The time period
is well after the Knights Templars had
been persecuted and ordered disbanded by
the Pope with some of their members
fleeing to the highlands of Scotland. It
is said the elder Templars selected six
MacTavish men and inducted them into the
monastic order. Among them were the Chief’s
sons. Three of the MacTavishes were of
Dunardry and three of Nether Rudal.
Recent
research at the Kilmichael
Glassary Churchyard revealed some long
hidden moss covered stone slabs. These stones
rest among the many MacTavish graves located
there. Markings on the stones indicated they
are not only MacTavish, but Templar graves,
They are currently being cataloged by an
Argyllshire preservation group.
The
clan is working on cleaning and restoration
efforts. We want to preserve these remarkable
and important historical artifacts for
future generations.
