KNAPDALIA
1654AD
Knapdalia
or Knapdale is located on the northern area
of the Kintyre penisula in southern Ergaida
or Argyll. The early MacTavish lived
their lives in this western seaboard area
of Scotland from the early 1100's. Indicated
here are the ancient landmarks in Knapdale
related to Clan MacTavish as noted on Blaeu's
Atlas Novus section map of Knapdalia
published in 1654 in Amsterdam. The
map is based on Robert and James Gordon's
revised and augmented manuscript of Timothy
Pont's surveys of the 1580's and 1590's.
Arrows indicate (from top down) castellated
building of Dunardery (Dunardry, Tonardare),
Loch Ald na Brain (Lake of the Baron), and
Castle Swyn (Sween). Original
Map is on file in the National Library of
Scotland.
