Castle Sween
Believed
to have been built in the late 12th century by
the family Sweyne (Sween, Swyne) and thought to
be one of the oldest in Scotland this castle is
located on the eastern shore of Loch Sween in Knapdale. The
Sweens held the castle until the late 13th century. The
MacTavishes interest in this castle is due to a
union of the daughter of the House of Sweyne and
Colin MacDuine of Lochow which produced two sons,
Taus (or Tavis) and Ivor. Taus
born in the early 12th century is considered to
be the projenitor of Clan MacTavish. The
castle is currently held by Historic Scotland.
